What happened to the Voice of Free China?

When the Republic of China (ROC) government was relocated to Taiwan in 1950, the island was also known to the outside world as "Free China." The ROC on Taiwan was recognized by the United Nations (UN) as the sole representative of China. "VOFC", or Voice of Free China, was used to tell the world about "Free China" as opposed to "Communist China." With the end of the Cold War era and increased exchanges between Taiwan and Mainland China, CBS adopted the call sign "Radio Taipei International" (RTI). This new call sign, which was first used in 1998, was a sign of goodwill to Mainland China, and a way of adapting to the changing times. In response to calls from listeners, CBS changed the call sign to Radio Taiwan International in 2003. With this new call sign, listeners can tell that our broadcasts are coming from the island of Taiwan.
