The Portuguese called Taiwan Ilha Formosa -- the beautiful island. No doubt this was because of the beautiful mountains that make up two-thirds of the island. Taiwan boasts 258 peaks of 3,000 meters above sea level and higher. Climbing Jade Mountain, the highest mountain in Northeast Asia, has long been a dream for many. A landmark for Taiwan, Jade Mountain -- in Chinese, Yushan -- is known for its spectacular scenery, lush vegetation and rich biodiversity.
In July of last year Yushan became one of 28 finalists in a global online poll to select seven new wonders of the natural world. However, its popularity has dropped since then partly due to the Typhoon Morakot disaster that hit central and southern Taiwan in August last year.
If you would like to support Yushan, you can vote online at www.new7wonders.com. The poll is organized by the Swiss-based New 7 Wonders Foundation.
